“Windbound is a brief tribute to Chou Wen-chung and his ideas of modal variation. It quotes his epic chamber work Windswept Peaks, literally starting where that piece ends. The piece showcases the clarinet as soloist and is comprised of two short sections, the first a hyperactive recitative and the second a coloratura-inflected aria influenced by the great wind-playing modal improvisers of the sixties. It was written in Beijing in May during the tumultuous aftermath of the Wenchuan earthquake and, if influenced at all by those events, was effected by both utter tragedy and resolve. It is dedicated to Chou Wen-chung on his 85th birthday.” – EM
