Duo Capriccioso

for violin, piano
By Mario Davidovsky

The Duo Capriccioso exhibits Davidovsky’s extraordinary capacity to exploit the timbral capacities of the instrumental resources, producing a decorous heterophony between with the colors of bowed and hammered strings, especially across the complete registral range of the piano and violin. As is often the case with Davidovsky’s music, gesture, melody, rhythm, and color are imbricated in subtle ways, and the audience bears witness to a dynamic dance in which the duo partners alternate between partnership, detachment, and opposition. Duo Capriccioso was premiered at New York’s Merkin Concert Hall in March 2004 by violinist Curtis Macomber and pianist Aleck Karis.

Other works by Mario Davidovsky:
“A gentleman brought music to his lady's window, who hated him,...and when he persisted, she threw stones at him. Whereupon a friend of his that was within his company, said to him; "What greater honour can you have to your music, than that stones come about you, as they did to Orpheus."”
