DRAMA: music and its double is a genre-breaking event that combines c)i’s signature virtuosity with theatre and improvisation to examine the idea of “character” in music. All the roles in this concert-cum-theatric tableau are portrayed by works of music, knitted together by readings and musical improvisation to describe beings portrayed, serenaded, desired, and lost. Alfred Schnittke’s Piano Quartet is a personal and musical transformation of Gustav Mahler’s only surviving chamber piece. Voix Instrumentalisée by Vinko Globokar combines the words of Galileo with the sonic anarchy of the bass clarinet to create music that is both hilarious and deeply moving. Georges Aperghis’ Mouvement pour quintette juggles complexity and lyricism with humor, like the razzing of old friends heard through a kaleidoscope. Kaija Saariaho’s Je sens un douxième coeur is a sensual entreaty directed at an unseen being. Vox Sanguinaria by Kyle Bartlett speaks in both “dream language” and the severe beauty of instruments stripped to their essentials to tell the story of a lost child. This groundbreaking event will challenge the audience to tread the subtle boundaries between music and drama and to discovering unexpected resonances, hidden meanings, and revelatory ideas. c)i will be joined by Matthew Gold, guest percussionist.

Programme:

“All I say is that non-experts often know more than experts and should therefore be consulted and that prophets of truth (including those who use arguments) more often than not are carried along by a visions that clashes with the very events that vision is supposed to be exploring. ”
--Paul K. Feyerabend, Against Method
